Ideal Use

Maxi Cosi Magellan Max Maxi Cosi Pria 70
Rear-Facing Weight: 5 to 40 pounds 9 to 40 pounds
Rear-Facing Height Limit: Up to 40 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 65 lbs 22 to 70 pounds
Forward-Facing Height Limit: 29 to 49 inches Up to 52 inches
High Back Booster Weight: 40 to 120 pounds N/A
High Back Booster Height: 43 to 57 inches N/A

Similarities:

These two car seats from Maxi Cosi share the same rear-facing maximum limit of 40 pounds and 40 inches. Their forward-facing minimum limit is also the same at 22 pounds.

Differences:

  • Rear Facing – Had the Tiny Fit version of Pria 70 not been discontinued by Maxi Cosi, it can be at par with Magellan Max in terms of rear-facing capability. Now that the Tiny Fit version is no longer available, Magellan Max is a better option since we can use it starting from infancy for babies weighing 5 pounds.
  • Forward-Facing and Booster – The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has a higher forward facing limit than Magellan Max, but the latter also offers a belt positioning booster mode. According to this press release for Magellan Max, what makes this child restraint system a 5-in-1 car seat is that it can be used in 5 modes, namely “Baby Rear-Facing, Toddler Rear-Facing, Toddler Forward-Facing, Child Forward-Facing and Belt Positioning Booster.” However, the 5-in-1 marketing is unnecessary since these 5 modes can be simply summed up to just 3, but it was probably for the purpose of making it seem more unique than other car seats in the market that offers rear-facing, forward-facing and booster mode.

Will It Fit In My Car?

Maxi Cosi Magellan Max Maxi Cosi Pria 70
Width 19.25 inches 19.5 inches
Height 24 inches 25.5 inches
Depth/Length 24.25 inches 22.8 inches

Similarities:

Both car seats are not what you need if you have a very compact vehicle and would like to save space in your car or if you are in search for 3-across child restraint. These seats are known for being bulky.

Differences:

  • Fit In Cars.

A reviewer said that Magellan Max was fantastically installed in the captain’s chair of a Toyota Sienna, a Ford F350 and a BMW X3. It was also installed with no problem in a Subaru Outback.

One parent said that if she could fit the Pria 70 in her Rav4, it could also fit in a BMW X3. It also fits well in a 2017 Honda CRV, Toyota Tundra Double Cab, and in an Acura MDX. It took up considerable space inside a Toyota Avalon.

Installation

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? Yes, allowed according to manual
Easy To Install Rear-Facing by LATCH? Relatively Yes
Easy To Install Rear-Facing By Seatbelt? Relatively
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Relatively
Easy To Uninstall? Yes
Recline Position 7 3
Lower Anchor Weight Limit:

35 pounds rear-facing

40 pounds forward-facing

40 pounds

Similarities:

Rolled Towels/Pool Noodles. In the manual of both child restraints, it is stated that a pool noodle or a rolled towel may be placed under the seat to achieve the necessary recline angle for your child.

  • For the Magellan Max, one parent said that the rear seat of their Ford Fusion Platinum had a high rise on its front part, which prevented them from getting it properly leveled. He added that there was an install clinic in their local hospital and the technician placed a rolled towel under the rear area to make the seat level.  If you feel uncomfortable with placing such aftermarket products to make car seats level, make it a habit to check if the car seat is still appropriately leveled and reclined each time you place your child in it.
  • One parent said that he was able to install the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 in his Honda Civic easily, but placed a rolled towel underneath to achieve the required level.

LATCH Connector. Both features a push button style connector for lower anchors or LATCH.

Differences:

  • Recline. Magellan Max offers more recline positions than Pria 70.

Magellan Max offers 7 recline angles. Its recline/level system is also more intuitive than that of Pria 70. At the base of the car seat, you can find a sticker label for the recline positions. There are 3 positions in blue for rear-facing, 2 positions in red for forward-facing and 1 position in purple for booster mode. To recline the car seat, place one hand on its back and your other hand to squeeze its recline handle. This will allow the seat to rotate in the base. Release the recline handle and it will automatically lock in that position.

Instead of a line, Magellan max has ball in bubble level indicator. However, some parents stated that the ball might be hard to see since it is located at the bottom of the seat. The bubble is made of clear plastic that it camouflages with the shell of the car seat, making it challenging to see the ball for leveling.

There are only 3 recline options for Pria 70. It has a recline adjustment foot found at the front, but adjustment is from the rear part. Level indicator is a molded line at the side.

  • Lock-Off For Vehicle Seat Belt Installation. Magellan Max has a built-in lock off device while Pria 70 has none.

Magellan Max offers more convenience with the seat belt installation because it has auto lock-off for both rear-facing and forward-facing belt paths. Take note, however, that when using these lock-offs, the vehicle seatbelt should also be locked .

With no integrated lock-off feature, you would need to make use of the car’s seat belt locking mechanism or a metal locking pin for Pria 70’s seat belt installation.

  • Booster Mode. Magellan Max is better than Pria 70 regarding having a belt positioning booster. However, be informed that the opening of its belt guide is rather small. Cars may have different seat belts. Some are thin, some are thick, etc. and this could contribute to whether or not the belt will end up bundled or twisted when threaded through the guide or the belt path.

Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes

Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Relatively No

Similarities:

  • Both car seats feature Dorel’s Air Protect Technology for its side impact protection. This means that the side impact protection of Pria 70 and Magellan Max are not like ordinary SIP made with foam. Instead, the Air Protect cushion is like a bag that contains air. During an impact, air will be released to dissipate the energy that could injure a child occupant.
  • They also have no steel frame. Pria 70 features a flex-tech system that dissipates energy in various directions. Magellan Max has polymer truss that optimizes impact energy management.

Differences:

  • Additional Safety Feature. You can adjust the torso of the Maxi Cosi Magellan Max for a much more optimized side impact protection. There are 3 adjustable torso positions you can use for your child.

Similarities:

  • Parents approve both for having breathable fabric covers that help make babies remain cool and comfortable even after long hours of travel.
  • The fabric covers of these Maxi Cosi car seats are also easy to remove, can be machine washed and tumble dried. What might annoy you is that you need to work on the headrest and the seat cover separately. Take care not to damage the Air Protect cushions of the headrests.

Differences:

  • No-Rethread Harness/Buckle System.

They make the Magellan Max extra special. The extra features are found on its harness system. One is the magnetic chest clip that will buckle automatically because it has magnets. It also features spring-assisted shoulder harness that will help a lot in getting a child in and out of the seat. The spring forward buckle will prevent the buckle from getting stuck under the child.

Pria 70’s chest clip is not that advanced or impressive, but is simple to use.

  • Cup Holders. Magellan Max has 2 cup holders although a few complained that they were small and could not fit a lot of cups.

  • Strap/Buckle Issues.

Magellan Max is not exempted from complaints about tightening the harness. Many parents shared their experiences and solutions to this problem. One mom said that the internal button must not be pressed while the strap is being pulled. Here is a video you can watch to properly use buckle and tighten the harness.

This other video shows how to loosen the harness of Maxi Cosi Magellan Max.

Another complaint for Magellan Max is that the crotch strap is too short, but there are three slots for adjusting the crotch buckle. Watch this video showing how to change the crotch buckle position to fit your child.

The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has some low rating reviews especially from parents who believed that the strap/buckle of this seat is seriously flawed. However, more parents find this hard to believe since they did not experience the same issues when working on the Pria 70. One parent stated that although the buckle was stiff at first, she eventually found that it got better. She also initially thought that the slack from the straps was hard to pull. Yet, she later said that pulling simultaneously in the back and at the front could make the straps tight with no problem. If you experience the same troubles with Pria 70, you could read this article that also contains clear pictures for illustration of instructions.

Conclusion

There is an approximately USD 180 price difference between the Maxi Cosi Magellan Max and Pria 70. Magellan Max is more expensive.

Comparing the two, it is easy to see that the Magellan Max can be a much more worthy investment if you want a more reliable car seat for your child.

Magellan Max:

  • has a lower minimum rear-facing weight requirement.
  • can be used until booster mode.
  • has an adjustable torso.
  • has more recline settings.
  • can last far longer than other car seats (up to 12 years).
  • has an extra cup holder.

If your budget is tight, The Pria 70 can give you:

  • a higher forward-facing limit
  • ease of installation rear-facing via LATCH
  • “lighter” seat
