Ideal Use

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max Clek Fllo
Rear-Facing Weight: 14* to 40 pounds

14** to 50 pounds (US)

14*** to 40 pounds (Canada), the child can sit on his/her own

Rear-Facing Height Limit: Up to 40 inches 25 to 43 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 85 pounds 22 to 65 pounds, 2 plus years old (Recommended)
Forward-Facing Height Limit: Up to 52 inches 30 to 49 inches

*without infant wedge (infant insert)

** and *** without infant thingy (infant insert)

Differences:

  • Rear-Facing

The Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max already comes with a wedge that will help make the tiny body of a 5-pound newborn baby to fit within the harness system of this child restraint.

However, if you are upgrading from an infant car seat and would like something that will let you place your child in the rear-facing position for a longer time until 50 pounds, your best bet is the Clek Fllo. You can also get the separately sold Clek infant thingy (affiliate link) should you wish to use the Clek Fllo from 5 pounds.

  • Forward-Facing

From the growth chart found here, the maximum forward-facing weight and height limits of Fllo might be used by children 7 to 9 years old. The maximum forward-facing limits of Pria 85 Max would render it useful until around 11 years old (although pay attention to the lifespan of Pria 85 Max, which is 10 years).

Will It Fit In My Car?

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max Clek Fllo
Width 20 inches 16.9 inches
Height 26 inches

23.5 to 27 inches (rear-facing)

26 to 31 inches (forward-facing)

Depth/Length 21 inches

32.5 inches (rear-facing)

12.5 inches (forward-facing)

Similarities:

They may, at one point, have the same height of 26 inches, when Fllo is placed at a certain angle forward-facing in the vehicle.

Differences:

  • Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max is a bulky child restraint system.  While it may fit inside a compact vehicle, the space for the driver or for other passengers might be compromised. Thus, this will be a good child passenger seat to have inside more spacious, large vehicles. It was reportedly installed pretty well inside 2015 GMC Acadia, Grand Jeep Cherokee, Ford Focus 2001 model and Chevrolet 2008 model. Some parents noted they had to move the driver’s seat or front passenger seat so that the proper recline will be achieved.
  • Clek Fllo is the car seat you will want to have if you are looking for a space saving 3-across child restraint option similar to Clek Foonf or Diono Radian series car seats. Parents shared how they were able to fit this in Chrysler Town & Country, Subaru Outback, 2014 Subaru Forester and Toyota Prius C.

Installation

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? No

(but allowed according to the manual)

Only a tightly rolled towel,

according to this support article

Easy To Install Rear-Facing by LATCH? Yes
Easy To Install Rear-Facing By Seatbelt? Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Yes
Easy To Uninstall? Yes
Recline Position 3 2
Lower Anchor Weight Limit: 40 pounds

Rear Facing – 35 pounds

Forward Facing – 40 pounds

Similarities:

You may use aftermarket accessories in propping up each of these car seats in recline angles appropriate for the child occupant. Yet, make sure that you will use only a tightly rolled towel and not a pool noodle with Clek Fllo. They also offer just a line indicator as a reference in determining if the car seat is appropriately leveled.

Differences:

  • Ease of Installation

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max may be installed in a way similar to how you would install other car seats, which is probably why most reviews claim ease of installation.

The Clek Fllo differs somewhat from other car seats, installation wise, as there are a few steps that you need to perform prior to the actual installation, similar to its big brother Clek Foonf. There is a recline foot that should be set up accordingly for rear-facing and for the forward-facing. Once locked into place, the Anti-Rebound Bar or ARB should be put in place (only if you want to in the rear-facing).  ARB gives additional safety during a collision and could also help in getting the right recline angle. Yet, you may choose not to use the ARB if you want to save more space in a car.

  • Recline – Pria 85 Max has more recline positions to offer than Clek Fllo.

Safety

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max Clek Fllo
Country Of Origin: USA Canada
Steel Frame: No Yes
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Yes Relatively

Similarities:

Approval for airplane use, side impact protection and five-point harness system are present in both car seats.

Differences:

  • Key Safety Feature

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max is like other Maxi Cosi convertible car seats that are equipped with Air Protect for side impact protection. It helps minimize possible injury to a child as its air-filled pocket dissipate air and crash energy on contact during a side impact. This child restraint also has a magnetic “ClipQuick” chest clip that children would not so easily take off although parents can use it with a single hand.

The safety features of Fllo include the steel ARB that enhances stability and limits rotational movement of the car seat during an impact, thus protecting the child’s head. It further has side impact protection consisting of adjustable headrest, deep side wings and metal substructure. There are also 2 layers of foam that is designed to absorb energy from a collision. The flip foot that you need to prepare prior to installation will help keep the seat in place, particularly in rear-facing mode. It also offers an integrated belt lock-off. During an impact, its energy absorbing crumple technology will engage so that the impact force will be transferred to its aluminum honeycomb core. In essence, this means that the energy that could otherwise injure a child will be simply passed on to the core rather than to the child’s body.

  • Safety Efficiency

If you are among those consumers who give high regard for real life usage testimonials from other people, then the Pria 85 Max will be your absolute choice than the Fllo. Pria may have features that are just above the basic safety features of most car seats, but it has been proven effective in many instances. One is that of a parent whose 3-year old child remained unharmed after a 70 mph rear-end crash with a tractor trailer.

Yet, this does not mean that Fllo is ineffective in safeguarding your child especially during a crash. Comparing the safety features described above, Fllo is actually much more feature-packed than Pria 85 Max. While you might not be able to find real-life stories from parents (at least as of writing this review), Clek is possibly the only (or at least one of the few) manufacturer that publishes crash test results for its products. Clek has been rigorously tested and its results are published here

Similarities:

Both are roomy seats. Other common features that the two child restraints share are breathable covers and shoulder harness pads.

Differences:

  • Fabric Cover – Fllo has a more advanced fabric cover, which they call “Crypton Super Fabric.” It can repel not only wetness but also stains and bacteria.
  • Cover Care And Maintenance. If the dirt is minimal, Fllo has a cover that we can wipe just clean. Yet, many parents would want to throw the seat cover in a washing machine to wash away excessive grime. Here, Pria 85 Max will be a more suitable option. We must take the cover of Fllo piece by piece and can only be hand-washed.
  • Harness System  – Pria 85 Max has a no-rethread harness which will allow you to adjust the harness height and the headrest position together.
  • Accessories (Infant Body Support, Cup Holder) – Pria 85 Max already have these must-have accessories in the box.

Conclusion

Depending on the fabric/color/fashion you will choose, the Clek Fllo can be approximately USD30 cheaper or USD 130 more expensive than Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max.

With Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max, what you will have is a car seat that:

  • can be used longer in the forward-facing
  • has more recline positions
  • has a 5-point harness that is easier to buckle and unbuckle
  • is lighter
  • has a machine-washable cover
  • has a convenient to use harness/headrest system
  • has easy to remove cover
  • has longer expiration date
  • comes with the accessories to support small and delicate bodies of infants
  • has a cup holder
  • has more crotch strap positions

Clek Fllo is a car seat that can give you:

  • extended rear-facing usage
  • 3-across or space-saving setup in a vehicle
  • a steel body frame
  • many safety features to keep the child unharmed (Anti-Rebound Bar, aluminum honeycomb core, etc.)
  • a stain, bacteria and wetness resistant fabric cover
  • an extra crotch strap position

Clek Fllo looks tempting with its advanced features, but I think Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max can be a more practical choice. Nevertheless, they are both safe and good seats.

  1. Excellent article!! I’m still so torn on what to put my toddler and infant in. I have one of each and am leaning now towards infant in Clek and toddler staying in pria since longer rear facing for Clek and longer forward facing for pria!

    1. Hi Lauren,

Both are safe seats, but staying rear-facing the longer is better. If you are in the US, Clek would let you use the seat up to 50 pounds, versus 40 pounds rear-facing of the Pria, as well as 43 inches versus 40 inches of Pria.

The Pria 85 Max will definitely win for forward-facing, so I think you are right to choose your toddler to stay in Pria and your infant in Clek.

      Regards,
      Pitin
