I personally like the look of The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Vs Chicco Nextfit. Aside from the plush looking patterns and vibrant colors that it comes with, it seems to be less restricted especially for older babies.

But the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 seems to be all “looks” when compared to the Nextfit.

Learn why.

Ideal Use

Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Chicco Nextfit
Rear-Facing Weight: 9-40 pounds 5-40 pounds
Tiny Fit Rear-Facing Weight: 4-22 pounds Not Applicable
Forward-Facing Weight: 22-70 pounds 22-65 pounds
Height Limit: Up to 52 inches Up to 49 inches

The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 seat by default has a higher minimum weight requirement before you can have your child seated in the seat. However, if you get the one with a “Tiny Fit” insert, that insert will serve as a new seat that you will have to “install” in the existing seat.

The Tiny Fit insert will allow your child to be seated as early as 4 pounds.

The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 also has a higher height limit than the Chicco Nextfit.

Will It Fit In My Car?

Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Chicco Nextfit

Height 25.5  inches 29.2 inches
Depth/Length 22.8 inches 21 inches

The Chicco Nextfit is narrower than the Maxi Cosi Pria 70. The Maxi Cosi 70 is longer.

Installation

Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Chicco Nextfit
Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? No No
Easy To Install Rear-Facing? No Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? No Yes
Recline Positions 3 9
Level Indicator Printed line on the seat Dual bubble levels on both sides
Easy To Uninstall? Yes Yes

When trying to fit them into your vehicle, the Chicco Nextfit has more room for adjustment since it has more recline positions.

Although you wouldn’t be needing to use a pool noodle for both, I feel they both are too upright for newborns.

Installing the Nextfit is a foolproof process. The straps even have labels saying pull this first and the other one next.

On the other side, the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 is not particularly easy to install and uninstall. Tightening the LATCH straps, for example, would need you to do it from the inside, under the seat cover’s side as I have mentioned in my separate review.

Knowing the proper recline is also easier to know in the Chicco Nextfit’s bubble indicator versus looking at the horizontal printed line in the Maxi Cosi Pria 70.

Safety

Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Chicco Nextfit
Country Of Origin: USA China
Steel Frame: No Yes
Five-Point Harness? Yes Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? No Yes

One safety issue that the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has is how difficult it is to secure your child in the seat.

When you pull the harness tightener from the front seat, it can be hard since it can get stuck from behind. The seat behind has ridges and there is a piece of the seat harness that has a tendency to get caught in one of the many ridges behind the seat.

Adjusting the seat harness of the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 when in rear-facing mode can be made easier by helping the strap move from behind the seat.

However, when in front facing position, it’s almost impossible to slip your hands behind the car seat to help move the harness, since it will be pressed firmly against your vehicle’s seat.

It can, therefore, be a major issue since you need to properly tighten your child in the seat harness ALL THE TIME.

The Chicco Nextfit’s seat harness can be easily pulled and adjusted from the front, and it can easily be done without a problem.

The Seat

Maxi Cosi Pria 70 Chicco Nextfit
Is The Material Breathable? Yes Yes

Machine Washable Cover? Yes Yes
Roomy? Yes Yes
No-Rethread Harness? Yes Yes
Comes With An Infant Body Support? Optional Tiny Fit Insert Available Yes
Easy To Remove Cover? Yes No
Expiration 6 years 8 years
Comes With A Cup Holder? Yes Yes
Shoulder Harness Has Pads? Yes Yes
Leg Straps Has Pads? No No

While both come with breathable seat materials, the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 comes with a technology wherein the seat fabric wicks wetness away from the skin.

The Chicco Nextfit is a little heavier.

Both have a machine washable cover but it can be time-consuming to remove the seat cover of the Nextfit.

The seat cover of the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 can be removed even without uninstalling the seat. You also don’t need to remove the harness. You just unsnap the cover and wash it away.

Both are roomy but it looks like your child will be less restricted to move in the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 since the Chicco Nextfit has high sides for added side impact protection.

When your child needs more room height-wise, you don’t need to manually remove the harness and rethread it for both. They come with an adjustable headrest that when you move up and down, the harness height goes with it.

However, the Maxi-Cosi Pria Tiny Fit insert will need manual rethreading since it is not connected to the headrest of the main seat.

The Chicco Nextfit has 2 years more than the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 before it expires.

Both have cup holders and shoulder harness pads so you wouldn’t have to get them separately.

Conclusion

Because of the straps issue that the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has, it can be hard to trust that your child will be secured, especially that the installation process for the Pria 70 is not the most intuitive one.

In this case, I’d go with the Nextfit seat.

However, I have been already aware that the Nextfit seat cover can be troublesome to remove. The Chicco Nextfit comes with a “Zip” version that solves the problem. Whenever you need to wash the seat cover, you can just easily unzip the cover.

The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 gets the point for the form, but the Chicco Nextfit wins for the function.

As of today, the Tiny Fit version of the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 has already been discontinued. The Maxi Cosi Pria 70 without the Tiny Fit is still out for sale.

  1. I agree with you, the Nextfit’s functionality makes me lean towards that one a little more. The one I have now is difficult to manage, so simplicity will be the key for me, specifically the buckle and unbuckle feature. I’m not a fan of straps.

    1. Hi Alewishes,

If you are not a fan of straps, then you are correct to choose the Nextfit. Just loosening and tightening the Maxi Cosi Pria 70’s seat harness can be an extreme test of your patience, LOL.

      Regards,
      Pitin
