Ideal Use

Graco Extend2fit Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max
Rear-Facing Weight: 4 to 50 pounds

From 5 pounds, with the infant wedge

From 14 pounds, without the infant wedge

Up to 40 lbs

Rear-Facing Height Limit: Up to 45 inches Up to 40 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 65 pounds 22 to 85 lbs
Forward-Facing Height Limit: Up to 49 inches Up to 52 inches

Similarities

  • The Extend2Fit and the Pria 85 Max can be both used in the rear-facing and in the forward-facing mode.

Differences

  • Minimum Rear-Facing Weight. They say the Graco car seat can be useful starting from four pounds in weight. Yet, reviews have claimed that this child restraint’s harness system would not securely accommodate 4-pound babies and preemies (shoulder straps are above the shoulders, requiring a crotch roll to be placed).

As for the Pria 85 Max’s fit to newborn, reviewers claim that 8-pound babies and doll models fit well in this car seat although it can accommodate a child starting at 5 pounds with the use of the infant wedge. The wedge is to be used for babies 5-11 pounds.

  • Leg Space/Room. Graco Extend2Fit features a leg extension tray that can be extended in three positions to accommodate the growing legs of the child. It does not make the seat safer, but it can help in making the child less awkward when sitting on a convertible car seat.
  • Maximum Rear-Facing Weight And Height. We can use Graco Extend2Fit in extended rear-facing position longer than the Pria 85 Max.
  • Forward-Facing Maximum Weight And Height. We can use both or switched to forward facing position at 22 pounds, but Pria 85 Max can offer longer service since you can use it until your child weighs 85 pounds and up to 52 inches.

Will It Fit In My Car?

Graco Extend2fit Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max
Width 19.2 inches 20 inches
Height 22.1 inches 26 inches
Depth/Length 25.2 inches 21 inches

  • Both are not excellent choices if you are looking for a car seat that can take up less space in the car or if you want a 3-across car seat. You can say they are huge and bulky.
  • Car Fit. From reviews of Extend2Fit, you would know that the vehicles in which parents installed it properly include Hyundai Veloster, Chevy Traverse, Honda Accord Coupe, Jeep Cherokee and Toyota Rav 4.

You should also note that since Extend2Fit has a leg extension tray, legroom for the driver or for the front passenger in a small and compact car might be decreased. Thus, you need to check if your vehicle has the fittings and mechanisms to allow the car seat to be installed in the middle seat in the back row since it is there where the leg tray can be extended to make both child and adult comfortable in terms of leg space.

Considering that Pria 85 Max is a huge car seat, it is likely to fit well inside larger vehicles. Yet, reviewers of this product claimed that they could install the Pria 85 Max inside 2015 Nissan Rogue LV, 08 Honda Civic and inside the Volkswagen Jetta (despite the squeeze).

Recline Position

6-position recline

1 to 4 for rear facing;

4 to 6 for forward facing

3 position recline
Lower Anchor Weight Limit: 45 pounds 40 pounds

Similarities

  • Pool Noodles/Rolled Towels. Both can be installed without rolled towel or pool noodle, but they write it in the manual of Pria 85 Max that such aftermarket product may be placed under the child restraint to achieve the right recline angle.
  • Buckle/Storage. Both child restraints have storage for the buckle. For the Extend2Fit, there are “Fuss-Free” pockets where the buckles can be stored if they are not in use. Pria 85 Max also has flip away crotch buckle and handy clips that also help eliminate the hassle of digging around and under the sitting child to search for the buckle tongues.

Differences

  • Ease Of Installation. Pria 85 Max has received positive reviews regarding its installation. However, one must pay close attention to details especially since its recline adjustment is not as intuitive as that of the competition. Extend2Fit, on the other hand, was reported to have some difficulty involved with rear-facing seatbelt installation.
  • Recline Positions. Extend2Fit offers more recline positions than the Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max. Six recline positions can be used when installing Graco Extend2Fit. Positions 1 to 4 are for the rear-facing position. A couple of rules or guidelines exist for the forward-facing position: we must use position 4 for children weighing less than 40 pounds; positions 5 or 6 must be used for children over 40 pounds.

Pria 85 Max has three available recline positions. We can use positions 2 or 3 in the rear-facing. In forward facing, recline position 2 must be used for children 22 to 40 pounds. Recline position 1 must be used for children 40 to 85 pounds. Despite having only 3 recline positions, many have given positive feedback regarding this Maxi Cosi convertible car seat, and they claimed that they did not see the need to use pool noodles or rolled towels.

  • Recline Adjuster Location. While both seats’ recline position can be changed or adjusted using a handle or bar, the location of this mechanism will play a crucial role. With the Extend2Fit, the handle is located at the front part of the seat, while the Pria’s adjustment bar is located at the back of the car seat.
  • Recline Indicator. Extend2Fit has a more intuitive bubble/ball recline level indicator. You only need to make sure that the ball is in the appropriate shade/color to know that the recline angle is correct. Meanwhile, Pria 85 Max has a line you need to make sure is in parallel or level with the ground.

Safety

Graco Extend2fit Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max
Country Of Origin: China USA
Steel Frame: Yes No
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? No Yes

Similarities

  • Whichever seat you get, you will get a car seat that is a side impact tested and approved for air crafts. Both also have 5-point harness with which can secure the child on the child restraint.

Differences

  • Steel Frame. Although the efficiency of the Pria 85 Max has been proven in keeping children safe during accidents, if you prefer a car seat with a steel frame because it feels sturdier, then the Extend2Fit will be your choice.
  • Side Impact Protection (SIP). The side impact protection of each product is uniquely named: Extend2Fit has Safety Surround Side Impact Protection while Pria 85 Max has Air Protect Technology SIP.
  • Real Life Accident Efficiency. All the safety features of any car seat will mean nothing unless they all work effectively during a real life road accident. Good thing with these two car seats, both have been given high ratings and positive feedback by parents who have properly installed the child restraint.

Graco Extend2Fit. A mother who bought her car seat when it was on sale was very grateful because her daughter remained safe and unharmed after their car spun and crashed into a sign. Another mom, this time of 2 children who were then 3 years old and 1-year-old respectively when the accident occurred, approved of the Extend2Fit. It injured none of the 2 children after the car rolled over for 6 times in an unfortunate accident.

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max. One mother recalled how they were rear-ended by a tractor trailer that was going on a speed of 70 mph.  Her 3-year-old son remained peaceful and still comfortable in his car seat. Another grandmother was also thankful for this car seat that safe guarded their grandson during a recent accident.

  • Safety Flaw. At least two parents mentioned in their review about the minor safety issue with Graco, which might make you think twice in buying it. The warning label at the part of the car seat where the child’s back would be at when sitting on the chair is said to be painted instead of woven onto the fabric. They said the paint could melt and cause a burn on the child’s skin, especially during boiling weather.

Similarities

  • Both are roomy for the child occupant.
  • Both have machine washable covers.
  • Both have no-rethread harness.
  • Both comes with 10 year expiration dates.
  • Both have shoulder harness pads.

Differences

  • Breathability. While they advertise both to have breathable covers, you might shy away from the Extend2Fit because reviews claim that it does not live up to its promise of breathability. With Pria 85 Max, reviewers claimed that its self-wicking fabric is breathable and can make the children passengers very comfortable.

The failure of Extend2Fit to provide utmost breathability could be because different fabrics make up the whole seat cover. Only those areas nearest or closest to the sitting child are made with fabrics that are breathable.

  • Harness Tightening. Adjusting and tightening the harness of Extend2Fit has been one reason parents have slashed off stars from its perfect rating. Its straps are apparently hard to tighten. However, you may watch this video showing how to tighten the strap in the rear-facing position.

The problem with the above technique is that it can work well in the rear-facing position when you have easy access to the back of the Extend2fit car seat. In a forward-facing position, it’s not a possible technique since the back of the car seat will be pressed firmly against the vehicle seat.

Pria 85 Max features a one-hand micro adjustment system for achieving the right harness/headrest position.

  • Cover Removal. Most parents know just how often things in the car and on the car seat could get messy with kids as passengers, so it will matter a lot to choose a child restraint whose cover can be removed with ease. For this factor, it will be the Pria 85 Max’s victory.

Graco Extend2Fit is widely known for having a cover that is too troublesome to remove. You could just watch this video to see how complicated it is.

If you are a very busy person, you might rather choose a car seat whose cover may be spot cleaned. This or get the other version of Extend2fit with the RapidRemove cover.

Pria 85 Max, as mentioned earlier, has a self-wicking fabric that repels dirt and stain. If you ever want to wash it, you can do so without going through a lot of stress that you would encounter with Extend2Fit, as you can see from this video.

  • Cup Holder. Extend2Fit has two cup holders while Pria 85 Max only has one. Be informed that the Extend2Fit’s cup holders are squarish and some bottles or cups might not fit in them.
  • Chest Clip. The Maxi Cosi model has a better chest clip feature than the Graco Extend2fit. The chest clip of Extend2Fit is standard, while Pria 85 Max has a unique magnetic type of chest clip that can be locked on and off with one hand. This magnetic chest clip will not be favorable for children who have electronic medical devices implanted in their bodies. Maxi-Cosi, apparently, may be contacted by the caregivers or parents so that a non-magnetic replacement may be requested.
