We are all looking for the "safest" car seat in the market. Just when we thought we have found it, one safety concern would bother us. The Graco Extend2fit 2 in 1 - although praised in its highest glory by most parents who use it, has crucial flaws worth noting.

ideal use

Rear-Facing Weight:4-50 pounds
Rear-Facing Height: Up to 45 inches
Forward-Facing Weight:22-65 pounds
Height Limit:Up to 49 inches

An additional 5-inch legroom has been added to the seat design so that you can have your kids stretch their legs comfortably.

This feature is also supposed to accommodate taller kids who haven’t yet reached the maximum weight limit of the rear-facing mode which is 50 pounds.

will it fit in my car?

Width19.2  inches
Height22.1  inches
Depth/Length25.2  inches

If you have a small vehicle, note that to extend the tray that is supposed to accommodate the additional inches of the passenger, the passenger seat would have to be pushed up way too far.

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel?No
Easy To Install Rear-Facing?Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing?No
Easy To Uninstall?Yes

The Extend2Fit comes with a generous recline so you wouldn’t be needing a pool noodle to further recline it for younger babies.

Apparently, it is way easier to install in the rear-facing mode than in the forward-facing mode.

Also, once installed in the rear-facing mode, it is hard to alter the recline angle.

Country Of Origin:China
Steel Frame:Yes
Five-Point Harness?Yes
Side Impact Tested:Yes
Approved For Airplane Use:Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle?No

A car seat’s harness is tight enough when you cannot pinch the webbing at the child’s collarbone. If you can grasp and pinch it, it is still too loose.

Some parents who could not get the harness tight enough to pass the pinch test regard it as not safe.

The chest clip is hard to unclip. Is it a good or a bad thing? Your little ones would not be able to play with it and let themselves loose and be unsafe. But that would mean a major difficulty too when it comes to emergency situations when you have to quickly release your child from the seat.

A Reality For Some Parents: Because the head padding is not removable, it is difficult for the passenger to turn their heads to clear their airway.

The Graco Extend2Fit is relatively light and compact compared to other convertible car seats in the market.

To extend the time your child is rear-faced is most of the time the main goal to ensure maximum safety.

But the promise of this seat to accommodate a child up to 2 years old seems incomparable to parents' testimonies of other car seats such as Diono Radian 3RXT* which have comfortably accommodated their children to still sit rear-facing for up to 3 years plus.

For a relatively affordable convertible seat with limited height and weight capacity compared to other convertible seats nowadays, I think it would be best to keep looking for a seat that can really "grow" with your kids until they are ready for the car's seat belt.

BUT if you are choosing between an infant car seat and the Graco Extend2Fit, the latter would definitely win by a few points since it can hold your little one from their first day until a little while longer than most infant car seats can.

What Do You Think?

I highly suggest that you check out the feedbacks of parents who already have this seat to help you further.

  1. In rear-facing mode, my 1-year-old is still looking slouched. I worry when he falls asleep. Since we already own the seat, I’m trying to figure out the best way to avoid this. Does it help to recline the seat? Any other ideas? He doesn’t look comfortable. I push him all the way back, and the crotch strap is set on the closest position.

    1. Hi Brooke,

I believe putting it back to recline # 1 or 2 so your child is reclined even more may prevent the head from falling forward.

With regards to the crotch strap, have you tried adjusting the crotch buckle position? I think there are slots for that which you can utilize as your child needs more space down there.

      I hope this helps.

  2. My daughter is really tall for her age and she only just turned two. They recently changed the laws where I live for how long a child needs to have a rear facing seat and it is encouraged up to 4 years old!! It is so difficult to find a good seat for a tall infant.

This review was very helpful and with the extended leg room feature, this seat looks to be very promising. I’m also thinking about your review that the clip is very strong -because it is definitely a good thing as my daughter likes to try and unclip herself but in case of an accident it needs to release quickly, so it’s a dilemma!

Do you recommend any other extended rear-facing seats?

  3. As an excited soon to be grandmother, I am grateful for the good information on your site about this car seat. I am now actively searching for a high quality, and most importantly safe car seat to purchase for my first grand baby. I can now with your review easily weave out bad car seats that will not keep my grandchild comfortable and safe. I will be purchasing a car seat that my daughter can use for her for a few years, it seems that this car seat is not a good fit for toddlers. Is this car seat a good choice for only infants?

    1. Hi Jacque,

Ideally, you can use it too for a toddler of up to 65 pounds and 49 inches. But because of the flaw in the design of the extra leg room, it makes it hard to trust it rear-facing for a child who is tall but is not yet ready for the forward-facing mode weight-wise. But how do we know if we’ll end up with a child who is way taller for their weight? If I may suggest, please check out my review of the Evenflo Symphony DLX as it is one of my highest-rated convertible car seats.
