When comparing car seats, I usually choose the one that has more modes of usage or the one with greater capacity. However, this comparison between the Evenflo Sureride DLX and Cosco Scenera Next has led me to prefer the car seat that is the opposite of my usual preference. I choose Scenera Next over Sureride DLX after contemplating on the benefits that each car seat offers. Yet, this is my opinion only. The needs of the child and the family will contribute a considerable weight on every parent’s decision. Keep reading to discover if my choice would also be suitable for your needs.

Ideal Use

Evenflo Sureride DLX Cosco Scenera Next
Rear-Facing Weight: 5 to 40 pounds
Rear-Facing Height Limit: 19 to 40 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 65 pounds 22 to 40 pounds
Forward-Facing Height Limit: 28 to 54 inches 29 to 43 inches

  • Rear-Facing

With the same rear-facing capacity, these 2 child restraints will be quite useful starting from birth for full-term, average sized infants.  Such babies, according to a table found here, weigh about 7 pounds and are 19 inches tall. Thus, the low-end of the rear-facing range would not likely be met and these 2 are, therefore, not suitable for preemies and smaller babies.

  • Forward-Facing

The forward-facing mode will draw the line between Cosco Scenera Next and Evenflo Sureride DLX and this will also make parents think that the latter would be a better convertible car seat.

Most children will outgrow the Scenera Next forward-facing  before they outgrow it rear-facing due to the position of the shoulder straps. In forward-facing, the straps have to be above the shoulders, but the highest strap slot in most 3-years old children is lower than their shoulders. This and the lower forward-facing capacity of only up to 40 pounds altogether make this Cosco child restraint useful only in rear-facing and perhaps forward-facing for children about 2 years of age.

With the 65 pounds max limit, the Sureride DLX would be comparable with other more expensive convertible car seats like Graco Extend2Fit and Britax Boulevard Clicktight. Provided that all weight and height requirements are met and the child could sit comfortably and safely on it, the Evenflo Sureride convertible could probably be of use to a particular child until the end of its lifespan, which is 6 years.

Good All-In-One Car Seats

Will It Fit In My Car?

Evenflo Sureride DLX Cosco Scenera Next
Width 19 inches 17 inches
Height 26.5 inches 23.5 inches
Depth/Length 12.5 inches 22 inches

  • Space-Saving

Of these 2 choices, Cosco Scenera Next would be a worthwhile option for parents who are looking for a child restraint that can save space in a compact car or can be readily installed 3-across in mid-sized vehicles.  With only 17 inches of width, it is as narrow as other slim 3-across car seats like Clek Fllo and Diono Radian 3RXT.

Evenflo Sureride DLX, on the other hand, is a bit wider than Scenera Next at 19 inches.

  • Fit In Vehicles

Most reviews you could read about Cosco Scenera Next will let you discover that many parents have actually bought this product mainly for their air travels or as secondary car seats. They attest that the Scenera Next fit perfectly on Airplane seats such as JetBlue, Etihad and Southwest flights. The size of Scenera Next was also said to be perfect on the Boeing 737 airplane seat. Since this child restraint is mostly used in air travels, one parent shared and recommended using a rolling travel stroller to lug the car seat around. Also, if you already have a larger baby stroller, just like one parent who reviewed Scenera Next, you might want to check if it will fit under your stroller so you will not need a separate travel accessory for it.

Evenflo Sureride DLX has also been confirmed in many reviews to be a good travel car seat such as aboard Southwest and Allegiant flights. There are also reviews you could read where it was stated which vehicles the car seat was installed in. Such vehicles include Toyota RAV4 and 2013 Honda Pilot. Installed rear-facing with recline foot in place, it could take up more space than you expect so the front seat would have to be moved forward.

Installation

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? Not mentioned in the manual Yes, mentioned in the manual
Easy To Install Rear-Facing? No Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? No Yes
Easy To Uninstall? Yes
Recline Position Fixed

  • Pool Noodle, Rolled Towel

Cosco Scenera Next’s manual states that a pool noodle or a rolled towel can be placed under the car seat to make it more reclined. In the manual of Evenflo Sureride DLX, you would not be able to find any entry mentioning that a pool noodle can be used. Thus, you should consult first with the manufacturer or with a CPST if this is safe to use.

  • Recline

The use of aftermarket products to put up each car seat in more recline position is necessary in most (if not all) applications since these child restraints do not have numerous recline positions to offer.

The fixed recline of Scenera Next is for rear-facing and this can be done by making sure that the level indicator line at its side is leveled with the ground (your car should be parked on level ground). As the child grows, the car seat can be installed in a more upright position. If the child who will use Scenera Next can already sit unassisted, you need to make sure that the grommets underneath the shell are in contact with your vehicle seat, thus making the installation more upright.

There is a recline foot in Sureride DLX that you need to engage or put in position in rear-facing. Vehicle seats with steep slope will likely call for rolled towels in order to install the car seat in a more reclined position. This Evenflo car seat also has a line level indicator parents need to look at to determine proper leveling.

  • Installation

Scenera Next is such a slim and very lightweight child restraint and these factors most likely contribute to its ease of installation. The car seat is very basic and can be mounted on vehicle seats using traditional means of installation. As it is quite useful in rear-facing mode, many parents even claim that it is probably the easiest to install in this mode, regardless if it is via LATCH or via vehicle seatbelt.

Although not impossible to install, parents who have already tried installing other car seats with ease can easily make a comparison and claim that Sureride is one child restraint that can pose some challenges.  It apparently has no base so tightening the straps can be an issue since it would be awkward reaching over the seat to pull the straps. Switching the LATCH straps from forward-facing to rear-facing and vice versa is also said to be difficult.

  • Real-Life Efficiency

Despite not having steel frame construction, these car seats have been proven safe and effective at least on occasion. In terms of the number of safety testimonials from parents, you will find that Sureride DLX has an abundance of it on its Amazon sales page while you have to search more info online to find one account for Scenera Next.

This article that can be found online recounts a horrible accident that happened to a mother and her 2 babies. The vehicle was pictured to be totaled and there was also a photo of the car seat that the children used. In the story, no brand name of car seat was given, but many members of Babycenter.com confirmed that from the photo, the car seats are most likely Cosco Scenera Next.

A mother noted that Evenflo Sureride DLX is the lifesaver for her daughter when they encountered a bad road accident. If her daughter was not strapped on the car seat, the child would have been ejected as the car’s engine itself flew across the field due to the major impact.

  • Breathable

Some parents, especially those who live in areas where the weather is known to get hot and humid, pay attention on how breathable a car seat’s cover is so they will know if a particular product could be of great help in keeping their kids cool during car rides. For this reason, Cosco Scenera Next would be a more preferred option than Evenflo Sureride DLX. Its cover is not a self-wicking fabric, but it is considerably breathable since it is not very thickly padded, but still comfortable enough for children.

  • Seat Weight

Scenera Next is considerably lighter than Sureride DLX. This makes it easier to maneuver during installation and portable enough to carry around when switching from one vehicle to another or when traveling.

  • Harness System

Scenera Next is better than the competition in terms of having a harness slot position that can better fit the bodies of passengers, especially the smaller ones. This is because it has a newborn routing feature that will give snugger strapping on 7 pounds babies. Its 5 harness positions are evenly distanced at 5 to 13 inches.

Sureride DLX will win the category on the number of harness slots since it has 6 slot positions to offer. However, the lowest slot might be too tall for small occupants. Apparently, there are 2 loop sets on the ends of the harness and it can be shortened for smaller babies.

Moreover, the slot positions are rather far from each other so many parents have some issues with it. This will be rather awkward on the child, so parents might be tempted to switch to forward-facing, which should only be done if the weight, height and shoulder strap requirements are met.

  • Expiration

Scenera Next has longer and, therefore, more preferable, years of usage. It means that it can be handed down from one child to (up to) 3 younger and smaller children in the family. Sureride DLX can last only 6 years so it could be used by one child up to only 6 years. It can be handed down to (up to 2) younger siblings. Other 65 pounds convertible car seats can be used by a single child until the 65 pounds limit is reached until more than 6 years.

Conclusion

There is an approximately USD 40 price difference between the Evenflo Sureride DLX and Cosco Scenera Next. The Sureride DLX is more expensive.

Do not be quick to ignore the Evenflo Sureride DLX because it also has some attributes that the competition may not have.

  • Its forward-facing capacity is greater at 65 pounds and 54 inches.
  • It has numerous safety and efficiency testimonials.

Enumerating the advantages offered by each car seat, I have come to a conclusion that Scenera Next would be the more preferable child passenger safety product to invest money on.

Cosco Scenera Next has the following to offer:

  • It is affordable to be a secondary car seat, a baby shower/christening gift or an entry in a baby gift registry.
  • It is slim enough to be installed 3-across in many mid-sized vehicles.
  • It is simple and easy to install despite not having any fancy installation features.
  • The 5-point harness is easier to buckle and unbuckle.
  • It is comfortable enough despite not having so much padding like other car seats.
  • It is more lightweight and it can be an ideal travel car seat.
  • Its serviceable years can last long enough to be used by up to 4 consecutive siblings in the family so it will be a practical choice especially for families with multiple kids.
  • Its harness slot positions are uniformly distant so that it will less likely cause any awkward fit to child passengers.
