On this side-by-side comparison of the Cosco Apt 50 and the Cosco Scenera Next, it will show you they are not that different from one another. However, it is the Cosco Scenera Next that I will choose because despite being very minimalistic, it does its job well.

Ideal Use

Cosco APT 50 Cosco Scenera Next
Rear-Facing Weight: 5 to 40 pounds
Rear-Facing Height Limit: 19 to 40 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 50 pounds 22 to 40 pounds
Forward-Facing Height Limit: 29 to 43 inches

Similarities

  • They share the same rear-facing weight and height limit. It would depend on the body size of the child, but an average sized newborn baby of 19.5 inches long and weighing 7.25 pounds would be a fitting initial occupant of these car seats.

The Scenera Next might be equipped well-enough to accommodate a newborn with weight and a height of 7 pounds 19 inches, but it might be too upright for such a child. We can say the same about Apt 50.

Differences

  • The main difference between the two in terms of specification and ideal usage is in the forward-facing maximum weight limit. We can use Scenera only up to 40 pounds while Apt 50 is up to 50 pounds.

It is interesting to know that the predecessor of Apt 50, the Apt 40, used to have a maximum weight limit of just 40 pounds. The upgrade to the Apt model was made because parents claimed that once a child outgrows the seat in the rear-facing, they also outgrow it in the forward-facing.

Looking at statistics, an average 4-year-old pre-schooler who weighs about 40 pounds and is about 40 inches tall, would still be within the limits of these child restraints although they would soon outgrow the harness and the crotch strap.

Good All In One Car Seats

Will It Fit In My Car?

Cosco APT 50 Cosco Scenera Next
Width 22.5 inches 17 inches
Height 23 inches 23.5 inches
Depth/Length 21 inches 22 inches
  • Scenera Next

They particularly recommend this and praised as an awesome travel car seat as it fits well in airplanes and rental cars. It could even fit well in a 911 Porsche bucket seat. It is quite a narrow seat that can even fit in 3-across setting.

  • Apt 50

Considering that it is substantially wider than the Scenera Next, three of this product would not fit in a single row of a car. Based on reviews, Ford Escape (but could be a tight fit), Subaru STI and Kia Optima are among the cars where this car seat has been installed.

Installation

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? Yes, if needed (according to manual) Yes, for sloped vehicle seats
Easy To Install Rear-Facing by LATCH? Relatively Yes
Easy To Install Rear-Facing By Seatbelt? Relatively Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Relatively Yes
Easy To Uninstall? Yes
Recline Position 2 recline positions Fixed
Lower Anchor Weight Limit: 50 pounds None in effect

Similarities

  • Both allow the use of a pool noodle/rolled towel to achieve the appropriate recline for children. However, you may watch this video to learn how you can install the seats without pool noodles.

  • In Cosco Scenera Next’s manual, there is a section that is dedicated on how the harness system can be adjusted to fit smaller infants. Here is a visual demo of this special newborn routing.

  • Both have line indicators for the recline.
  • Both may be installed in the center of the back seat by borrowing the lower anchor connectors of the left and right seats, provided that the vehicle allows it.

Differences

  • Labeling. They say the APT 50 is the among the first car seats from Cosco that have color coded labeling. You would find blue stickers that contain bits of information on its rear-facing installation/usage. The red stickers denote details for forward- facing installation/usage. Such labeling is a handy feature if the user manual is not available. You can use your Smartphone with active data to scan the QR code on the sticker, and you would be directed to its online installation videos.  Conversely, though Scenera Next has none of the color-coded labeling, most of the reviews claim that users found no major issues in installation or usage.
  • Lower Anchors Weight Limit. With Scenera Next, you could forget about the lower anchor weight limit because none is in effect because of its lightweightness. Combining its weight and the forward-facing limit of 40 pounds would not exceed the 65 pounds limit of the lower anchors of most vehicles. The Apt has a lower anchor weight limit of 50 pounds. While this limit is the same as its maximum forward-facing weight, still pay attention to your child’s weight as every child differs in the body built and physique.
  • Recline. Apt 50 offers two recline positions while Scenera Next offers only one. As mentioned earlier, there are color coded sticker labels on the side of the APT 50 that will help facilitate its installation and use. On the stickers, you can see two rear-facing recline lines that you must refer to (depending on the weight of the child – under 22 pounds and over 22 pounds) and ensure to be parallel to the ground for children who cannot sit upright without help. Scenera Next also has a line that you should refer to and ensure to be in parallel with the ground.

Safety

Cosco APT 50 Cosco Scenera Next
Country Of Origin: USA
Steel Frame: No
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Yes

Similarities

  • Both these USA-made convertible car seats may seem as basic as a convertible car seat could be, but they are side impact tested, airplane approved and meet /exceed the Federal Safety Standards.

Differences

  • Harness Heights. While Scenera Next and Apt 50 have 5-point harness, the APT 50 can probably provide a more customized, less awkward fit for the child. This is because Scenera Next only has 5 harness heights while Apt 50 has 6 harness heights.
  • Real-Life Accident Scenario. Both of these Cosco convertible car seats are what you can easily describe as basic car seats, void of any advanced features that more expensive car seats have. Most parents would likely not prefer any of these two as their children’s day-to-day car seat.

You might have more confidence in the Scenera Next in terms of safety because a further digging for information online will direct you to this article post. It’s a grave accident that resulted to the vehicle being totally wrecked. One might think any passenger in the car could have been seriously injured. Yet, the two babies inside were only injured slightly, thanks to the unnamed car seats they were sitting on.  Looking at the photos in this post, members of the BabyCenter.com community shared their opinion that the seats are the Cosco Scenera Next.

If you want another assurance that Scenera Next lives up to its capability of safeguarding your child while traveling in a car, you can find a testimony at Consumer Reports. This time, you are sure that it was the Scenera Next that protected a 10-month-old girl during the severe car crash.

To be fair, I also did look for any news report about Cosco Apt 50 being involved or tested in real life road mishaps. However, there was really nothing I could find about it. If you do your own research online, you might even feel disappointed that you cannot find more online resources about Apt 50 that will help you decide if it is a good buy. I could say that I can put more trust on the Scenera Next for keeping babies safe.

In case you know about any incident related to Apt 50’s safety, share them below so we can help other parents out there in making a well-informed decision about car seats.

The Seat

Cosco APT 50 Cosco Scenera Next
Is The Material Breathable? Considerably
Seat Weight: 8 pounds 7.65 pounds
Machine Washable Cover? Yes
Roomy? Yes
No-Rethread Harness? No
Comes With An Infant Body Support? No

Expiration 8 years
Comes With A Cup Holder? Yes, 2 Yes, 1
Shoulder Harness Has Pads? No Sold Separately
Crotch Pads? No
# Of Headrest Positions: Fixed
# Of Crotch Strap Positions: 3

Similarities

  • Both seats are considerably breathable. As you can see from these videos of Apt 50 and Scenera Next, you could deduce that they are not very cushiony. Thus, even if the fabric of the seat cover is not made of highly breathable material, the child would not feel too hot and sweaty because of the not too plush padding.

How To Remove The Cosco APT 50 Seat Cover

  • Their covers are also easy to remove and are machine-washable. Either product is preferable for kids who make a lot of mess and are accident-prone (accident here refers to food, motion sickness and potty accidents). The thin padding would allow the covers to be dried faster compared to seat covers that take longer to dry. You may also order for replacement covers for these two seats at Cosco.

Differences

  • Cup holders. Scenera Next only has one cup holder while Apt 50 has two.
  • Crotch Strap Positions. The two car seats each have three crotch strap positions, but they differ on the slot measurement. Scenera Next has 2, 3, and 4.5 inches while Apt 50 has 3, 4.5, and 6 inches.
  • Weight. Scenera Next is lighter than Apt 50, albeit slightly.

Conclusion

Cosco Apt 50 would be your option if you want a car seat that

  • has a higher forward-facing weight limit.
  • comes with a color-coded installation sticker.
  • comes with one extra recline.
  • has one extra cup holder.
  • comes with one extra harness height.

You should choose the Cosco Scenera Next if you want a car seat that

  • can fit 3-across or fit perfectly inside the tight space on a small car.
  • is much easier to install in all modes.
  • is light and compact enough to fit above or under a baby stroller (lug around for air traveling).

The Cosco Apt 50 surely has some features that could make it seem better than the Cosco Scenera Next.

However, despite its short-lived lifespan (limited height and weight limits), I’d choose the Cosco Scenera Next, but only as a spare or air traveling car seat.
