Ideal Use

Clek Foonf Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max
Rear-Facing Weight: 14 to 50 pounds, able to sit upright on their own* 14** to 40 pounds
Rear-Facing Height Limit: 25 to 43 inches Up to 40 inches
Forward-Facing Weight: 22 to 65 pounds 22 to 85 pounds
Forward-Facing Height Limit: 30 to 49 inches Up to 52 inches

Both are convertible car seats that have rear-facing and forward-facing capabilities.

  • Rear-Facing

*Although the minimum rear-facing capacity of Clek Foonf is just 14 pounds, you can get a separately sold infant thingy to lower the weight requirement to 5 pounds. It also tempts parents to its extended 50-pound rear-facing maximum capacity.

**The Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max model has been revamped with the provided infant wedge that makes the car seat useful for babies at least 5 pounds in weight. The infant wedge may be used until the child weighs 15 pounds. Without the infant wedge, it can also just be used starting at 14 pounds.

  • Forward Facing – The Pria 85 Max wins in this aspect since it has way higher weight and height forward-facing capacity than Foonf.

33 inches rear-facing

The difference in terms of the size or dimensions is evident from the get go. The Pria 85 Max is bulky that it can take up a lot of space in a car while the Foonf is slim enough to fit 3 across in the middle seat or back row seat of even a compact vehicle.

  • Fit In A Car

Although its appearance is bulky, the slim design of Clek Foonf will enable parents to sit 3 kids across in a row of car seat in most models of cars like 2003 and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Tesla Model S Sedan and 1996 Toyota Tercel. Yet, consideration should be given that there is a base that must be attached at the bottom of Foonf in rear-facing installation. This means that the child restraint could sit closer to the roof and might block the driver’s rearview.

Parents with large vehicles will appreciate the Pria 85 Max car seat in terms of the space it can occupy. It could still be installed in smaller cars, although it might not leave enough room for other passengers. One parent noted that they needed to move up the front seat of their 2015 GMC Acadia so they could install the car seat to a proper rear-facing recline. This was also installed with no major issues in 2001 Ford Focus, 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Good 2-Way Car Seats

Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Yes
Easy To Uninstall? Yes
Recline Position 3
Lower Anchor Weight Limit:

Rear Facing – 25 pounds,

Forward Facing – 35 pounds

40 pounds

These two car seats share several features in terms of installation. Both allow the use of pool noodle or tightly rolled towel for achieving the correct recline position for the child. Both were also reviewed to have generally easy installation/uninstallation. Both also have 3 recline positions and have push on lower anchor connectors (rear-facing connector for Foonf).

  • Recline Level Indicator – Both have none of the more intuitive and easier to use bubble/ball indicator to check if recline angle is correct.

With Clek Foonf, you have a decal at the side on which you can find a color coded recline angle guide.

With Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max, you need to pay attention to the single recline line and make sure this is at level with the ground in rear facing.

  • Lower Anchor Weight Limit – You may forget about the lower anchor weight limit for a longer period of time until the child is 40 pounds with Pria 85 Max. With Foonf, you need to immediately change installation from LATCH to vehicle seatbelt when the child is 25 pounds in rear-facing and 35 pounds in forward-facing. This is due to the fact that the Foonf is a heavier car seat with its steel frame and metal forward-facing rigid LATCH.

  • Pre-Installation Accessories – Clek Foonf involves a few more steps to be completed prior to the actual mounting of it on a vehicle seat.  Yet, these steps and the accessories you need to put in place will all contribute to the safety and protection of your child, particularly in rear-facing.

With Foonf, you need to place the headrest first, then the Anti-Rebound Bar or ARB (for extra safety) and then the rear-facing base (for better control of recline). These accessories are for rear-facing installation.

Pria 85 Max involves the usual installation process for lower anchor and for vehicle seatbelt.

  • Forward Facing LATCH – Clek Foonf offers a much better, safer and easier means of forward-facing LATCH installation than the Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max. This is because it has a Rigid LATCH feature, which is basically a piece of metal that you must extend and then connect directly to the vehicle lower anchors. This Rigid LATCH requires no tightening effort, as you would normally perform with LATCH straps. You know that the Rigid LATCH has been installed properly when the LATCH indicator shows green. You may also push and pull the child restraint sideways and front to back if you want to be extra sure about how tight it is.

You may install Foonf forward-facing with both the Rigid LATCH and with the vehicle seat belt since the forward facing belt path is free to use. This way, you can forget all about the lower anchor weight limit.

Clek Foonf Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max
Country Of Origin: Canada USA
Steel Frame: Yes No
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Relatively Yes

Five-point harness, side impact protection and approval for airplane use are the features common in both these child restraints.

  • Safety Features – Clek Foonf is packed with more safety features than the Maxi Cosi 85 Max.

Clek Foonf has magnesium and steel for its substructure. It also has ARB (Anti-Rebound Bar) that helps the child restraint to remain flat on the vehicle seat as it can prevent rotation and frontal rebound in a side impact collision. Its “REACT safety system” involves crumple zones that will absorb energy (along with a dual layer foam) in a crash. Yet, they said its buckles are stiff sometimes, so it is difficult to unbuckle a child from the child restraint.

Pria 85 Max is one of Maxi Cosi and Dorel Juvenile’s child restraint products that have been built with Air Protect Technology for side impact protection. This involves air-filled pockets in the headrest wherein air is released when the child’s head hits it during a side collision. With this, it reduces the energy along with possible injuries to the child. Pria 85 Max also has a ClipQuick Auto magnetic chest clip that parents can use with just one hand, but something that children could not easily unclasp on their own.

  • Safety Testimonials

A parent said they were going at 50 mph when a wheel from another vehicle flew toward them so they had to instantly halt and it deployed their airbags. It was not a major accident, but the child remained safe on the Foonf car seat. In another major road incident, a father commended the Foonf for being a heavy duty car seat that prevented his child from getting injured.

A 3-year-old boy was safe and sound after his parent’s car was rear-ended by a tractor trailer going at 70 mph. A grandmother felt relieved that her 17-month-old grandson did not even have a scratch after the accident. Thanks to the Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max seat.

  • Fabric Cover – These two child restraints are highly approved for having breathable covers. The Foonf has a better offering of Crypton Super Fabric that not just wards off wetness, but also stain and bacteria. It is something that many users have complimented about Foonf. The Maxi Pria 85 Max has self-wicking fabric that keeps wetness away from the child’s skin and therefore helps make the child feel cool and comfortable, too.

  • Seat Weight – Foonf is much heavier than Pria 85 Max because of its steel structure. You might still think twice about carrying the Pria 85 Max when you are air traveling because it is bulky and weighs substantially.

  • Removing And Washing The Cover – The Pria 85 Max’s seat cover is easier to remove and can be machine-washed. Foonf, on the other hand, has a cover that can be a bit time consuming to remove, as you can see in this video. Remember that it can only be hand-washed.

  • Harness System – With the Pria 85 Max harness system, you do not need to manually re-thread the harness to change how it fits a child. While some have reported that the headrest/harness handle can be cumbersome to operate, all you need is just pull this handle to adjust the harness/headrest position.

  • Infant Body Support and Cup Holder – All these essential accessories already come with the box of Pria 85 Max, while you need to pay extra bucks and order them separately with Foonf.

  • Expiration – Pria 85 Max has a year longer expiration than Foonf.

There is an approximately USD 120 price difference between the Clek Foonf and the Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max. The Foonf is more expensive.

With Clek Foonf, you would be able to enjoy these prominent features:

  • Higher rear-facing maximum weight and height limits that makes it ideal for extended rear-facing usage
  • Narrow width that will enable you to fit 3 car seats in a row and/or save space in the car
  • Has Rigid LATCH for forward-facing which makes installation easier and more secure
  • Has ARB in rear-facing mode for child’s extra protection during an accident
  • Has steel frame and REACT system for safety
  • Has Crypton fabric that repels moisture, stain and bacteria
  • Has crotch pads

Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max has these notable features to offer:

  • Higher forward-facing weight and height limits that will allow you to use it longer before switching your child to a booster seat
  • Higher lower anchor weight limit
  • Easier to buckle and unbuckle the 5-point harness
  • Easier to remove and wash cover
  • Lighter
  • Machine-washable cover
  • Has convenient no-rethread harness
  • Comes with infant body support and cup holder
  • Longer expiration
  • Has more crotch strap positions

The Foonf is a tempting product to buy for its sturdy built, high quality, and extended rear-facing usage. If you could splurge, then you will not go wrong with Foonf.

However, based on the enumerated features of each child restraint, I could say that the Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max is a more reasonable child safety product to purchase. It comes with the essential accessories you will need to use it starting from birth and until the age when the child is ready for a booster seat. It may not have the more advanced safety attributes of Clek Foonf, but it has been proven effective in keeping child passengers safe from injuries during road mishaps.

  1. I had an accident 3 weeks ago. I got T-boned hard on a passenger side. My daughter (3.9 yo) was in her Maxi-Cosi Magellan on the back seat of the passenger side. Thank goodness for her car seat, she came out with no scratches, bruises or any injuries of any kind. I’ll be buying another Maxi-Cosi for sure!
