Avoid The Least Breathable Colors/Models

The seat that makes a baby sweat a lot is reported to be related to the color of the fabric. The least breathable models/colors are the Extreme,Adventure,* and Graphica,*

Get The Canopy With The Most Coverage

Canopy for every style is different. Some colors/models provide more shade protection from the sun while others barely have shade.

There are four types of Chicco Keyfit 30 car seat canopies – the sporty canopy, the magic canopy, the three-panel canopy, and the zip canopy.

The sporty canopy only gives an amount of shade as a visor cap does.

The magic canopy provides an extra sun shade. In the rear, there is a zipper that when you open, you can extend the canopy.

The three-panel canopy extends more than the sporty canopy.

And lastly, the zip canopy is for those looking for a fashion statement while still providing an ample sunshade.

The sporty canopies can be found in the following models/colors:

1. aster*
2. radius*
3. snapdragon*
4. graphica* (one of the least breathable material)
5. sedona*
6. midori* (most breathable material)
7. surge*
8. romantic* (available with Chicco Cortina travel system*)
9. pulse*
10. minerale (Available with Chicco Cortina travel system*)
11. glacial (Available with Chicco Neuvo Travel System Stroller*)
12. veranda (also available with Chicco Neuvo Travel System Stroller*)

It’s good to know that these twelve colors have already been discontinued by the manufacturer. If you happen to see them in physical stores, you have already been warned to avoid them. 🙂

The magic canopies are with:

1. isle*
2. coal*
3. avena*

The three-panel canopies are on:

  1. lilla*
  2. eucalyptus*
  3. moonstone*
  4. oxford*
  5. papyrus*
  6. polaris*
  7. orion*
  8. energy*
  9. lyra*
  10. iron (Available with Chicco Cortina CX Travel System*)
  11. coastal (Available with Chicco Viaro Travel System*)
  12. teak (Available with Chicco Viaro Travel System*)
  13. techna (Available with Chicco Viaro Travel System*)
  14. verdant (Available with Chicco Viaro Travel System*)
  15. lava (Available on Chicco Cortina CX Travel System*)
  16. lake (Available on Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System*)

And the zip canopies are built on:

  1. hydra*
  2. serene*
  3. singapore*
  4. eclipse*
  5. midnight*
  6. minerale*

Safety

Country Of Origin: China
Steel Frame: No
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Yes

The car seat comes with a thickly cushioned seat pad with energy-absorbing foam for improved side impact protection. A removable infant insert for smaller babies from 4 to 11 pounds will give extra support to your newborn’s head, neck, and back. It will also make them more secure on the seat itself.

For safe and snug fit, there is a comfortable, front adjustable five-point harness to ensure your baby’s utmost safety. It has three adjustment heights that you can adjust as your child grows. You should always adjust it at armpit height so that your child will be comfortable as well as safe.

The Chicco Keyfit 30 is one of the safest infant car seats around and has repeatedly been reported to save babies’ lives. It has also performed very well in several crash tests.

Seat Weight: 9.6 pounds

Roomy? Yes
No-Rethread Harness? No
Comes With An Infant Body Support? Yes
Easy To Remove Cover? Yes
Expiration 6 years
Shoulder Harness Has Pads? Yes

There is an ergonomically designed carry handle for easy portability.

Just a reminder: carrying this 9.6-pound empty car seat is manageable, but as your child grows, the carrier will be getting heavier with your child in it. You may need to attach it to a compatible stroller frame* or a stroller travel system for efficiently transporting around.

The carrier handle has three positions if you want to put the carrier down. You can position it in a way that will make it rock your baby to sleep, place the handle all the way back so that it doesn’t rock, and of course, you can leave it up for the standard carry position.

Conclusion

The Regular Chicco Keyfit 30 is only good IF you know what to get and avoid and there are lots of colors that can provide good canopy coverage as well as a breathable material seat.

As your child gets heavier, the total weight of the car seat + your baby can get heavy. Getting a little help from a compatible stroller will not need you to spend a lot.

The Chicco Keyfit Caddy* which costs around USD99 will let you snap in the car seat carrier in the caddy. After which, when your child outgrows the infant car seat, you can transition your toddler to another affordable stroller, which most of the time is an umbrella stroller.

Also, safety is not just about what kind of materials the seat has but also how easy it is to install the car seat and buckle up your child. All of these can be easily done with the Chicco Keyfit 30 without costing you an arm and leg.

I highly suggest that you check out the reviews of parents who bought it to see what they think of this seat.

  1. Hello,

I was wondering about the breathability of the fabrics in the colors iron or lava (part of the Chicco Cortina CX travel system). I saw them listed above on the 3-part canopy list, but how is the fabric?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Debi,

Sorry for the late reply. I had to read all the Amazon reviews of the Chicco “iron” color to get some feedback about the breathability of the fabric. Since it is sold as a part of a travel system, the breathability of the car seat fabric was never mentioned, at least as of writing this reply.

I usually “summarize” parents’ feedbacks about the products I review (unless I own and use them), but in this case, there is no basis for me to comment on the iron color’s fabric. Sorry about that.

The “lava” color, although available, has currently no feedback at all.

I’m sorry that this comment is not very helpful as of this moment, but I’ll surely update this post/comment as feedbacks become available.

      Kind Regards,

      Pitin

  2. Hello! Would you be willing to do a similar article for the Chicco Keyfit2? We tend to have bigger babies in our family, so we’re leaning towards the keyfit2 this time

    1. Hi Amanda,

The moonstone color’s canopy is a three-panel canopy and provides a good coverage just like the above-mentioned 3-panel canopy seat colors.

The removable newborn insert has the same material as the Papyrus, Orion and Energy, so it’s soft and breathable.

With regards to the breathability of the main body’s fabric, I cannot guarantee that it is 100{0b94e73e5e915ecbcf303cb4742b71cc2938bb096419f627339ee9d65669f423} breathable as there as no “reliable” reviews around about this specific color. But from my point of view, the fabric just looks almost the same as the Papyrus color, which means it should be ok.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  3. Hi Pitin,

Can you please provide some information on how the champagne color offered exclusively through Toy r us compare to papyrus model in terms of fabric material, breathability and canopy size?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Av,

With regards to the canopy size, the champagne color has the same “three-panel” style as the papyrus color. Both colors provide a good coverage since they can be extended way past the handle. I’m sorry it’s quite hard to find information on what type of fabric the champagne color has.

      Regards,
      Pitin

        1. Will you be getting it from Babies R Us? Would love an update as to how the fabric is if you end up getting it. I’m sure future readers will greatly appreciate it as much as I do.

          Regards,
          Pitin

    1. Hi Sam,

The Chicco Keyfit 30 Iceland color is mainly made up of a “houndstooth jacquard” fabric. To be specific, a “Houndstooth Jacquard” is made up of 48{0b94e73e5e915ecbcf303cb4742b71cc2938bb096419f627339ee9d65669f423} Cotton and 52{0b94e73e5e915ecbcf303cb4742b71cc2938bb096419f627339ee9d65669f423} Polyester.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  4. Hi there! I was so happy to find your post, so that I can avoid the short (sport) canopy! Thank you for your information! However… I just searched all of the colors listed in the 3-panel section and none of them seem to exist! Did Chicco update their colors recently? I’m finding lots of color names that you don’t have listed. Thanks in advance for any info you have!

    1. Hi Molly,

I have just updated the list on the three-panel canopies section as well as in the zip and magic section.

      I hope it helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  5. Do you know if Orion has only been released with the 3-panel canopy? We don’t have as many options in Canada and right now they’re on sale but I can only find Polaris and Orion. The problem is that most of the listings for Orion show two different stock photos, one black and grey with the sport canopy (an older model maybe?) and one with the 3-panel. I’ve been searching and asking around, but nobody seems to know. I’m still waiting to hear back from a retailer as to which seat I would get if I ordered from them. My local stores don’t stock the KF so I can’t see them in person 🙁

    1. Hi Beth,

I have checked around and all US online stores seem to carry the Chicco Keyfit Orion with a three-panel canopy. Even some Canada online stores have them in three-panel canopies. Although I did see a few Canada online stores that have the “visor-type” canopy listed as Orion, too.

May I know the link to the Canada retailer you are referring to? I think it is best to wait for them to get back to you to be completely sure.

      Regards,
      Pitin

    1. Hi Mel,

The infant insert that the indigo car seat comes with has the same material as the Lilla, Papyrus, and Polaris.

After you remove the insert, the main fabric used that stands out is a light-wash denim. Although it has soft material used on the sides, expect a soft denim texture as the main material without the infant insert.

The Chicco Keyfit 30 Indigo is sold as a part of a travel system. It comes with the Chicco Bravo stroller that has the same material and accents used.

The canopy coverage of the indigo infant car seat provides a decent shade (just way past the handle).

As of writing this comment, the Indigo color is no longer available at Target online. I checked around and there seems to be no place online selling it. Maybe you can go to the nearest Target store, they might still have it.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  6. Hi! I wonder if you have any comments about the ombra color of Keyfit 30? I’m curious about the canopy and how breathable the fabrics are. Thanks so much!

Chicco Keyfit Infant Car Seat and Base with Car Seat, Ombra – http://amzn.to/2uazU29

    1. Hi Yulia,

      Sorry for the late response.

If you filter the Amazon verified purchases to show the feedbacks for the Ombra color, these are the specific feedbacks for it.

      1. The sunshade is not enough. It’s not the three-panel canopy type like the above-mentioned specific colors that have good canopy coverage.
      2. Others who have purchased it say that its weight limit is only 22 lbs and not 30 pounds. If you have heard of the Keyfit 22, some parents say that this is it. Amazon should clarify that you are purchasing the Keyfit 22 once you select the Ombra color.
      3. The seat material for this specific color doesn’t seem to be durable.
      4. If you live in a place where it’s hot, you should avoid it as its dark color seem to contribute to how hot the seat gets.

If you are contemplating to get the Chicco Keyfit 30, it is best to choose from the following colors: Polaris, Lilla, Papyrus.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

    1. Hi Rico,

The quality and the capacity to use it is better than some that only accommodates up to 22lbs or up to 29 inches baby. But then again, we’ll never know when the child will finally outgrow the seat.

If budget is an issue to you, I suggest you check out my reviews of other car seats.. Sometimes, it’s not really all about the price.

      Cheers,
      Pitin

  7. Awesome review Pitin
This car seat is a go-to for parents, while also being safe for newborns up to 30 pounds. Not many car seats offer the comfort and snug fit like the Chicco Keyfit 30 infant car seat.
    Thanks!

  8. One of the biggest problem that most of the parents who have a new born baby face is taking the kids outside whenever they go for a vacation. It is very difficult to keep the child in the hands while traveling and also dangerous to make them sit alone. So Chicco Keyfit 30 infant cars seat can be a good solution for those parents. Also the price looks to be more affordable and attractive.

    1. Agree on that Sundar. For that cost, it means you can drive safely alone with your newborn. It is tough to go out alone with a child, let alone drive. A reliable car seat like this is worth investing in.

  9. The comfort of this product will just be secondary to my concern. “Safety first” right? The comfort is also a plus point or more like a bonus point to this infant car seat.

Sunshades? Who cares! As long as my baby is safe if car crash happens (Knock on the wood). But of course, I pray that it won’t. This product will surely ease some worries to parents who drives a lot along with their babies.

Nice review Pitin. I like this infant car seat even though it’s a little complicated to install. 😀

I’m thinking of buying one when my child is already out in this world. Keep it coming. 🙂

    1. I agree on the “safety first” issue. While some parents would want it all – meaning, form + function + comfort, SAFETY must always be the priority. And Chicco has made several options that can give all form, comfort and function! Kudos to them for doing that.

  10. Hey Pitin,
I’m just curious, is there any guidelines for the driver as well? Like any certain speeds we need to stick to, the length of driving or anything like that? I sometimes drive 6-7 hours.

    1. Hi Riaz,

It is advisable not to leave a baby on a car seat for more than 2 hours. They will have a tendency to slump and some findings show their lungs will not be able to expand sufficiently. It would reduce the amount of oxygen in their blood. For extended drives, it is best to have stopovers. 🙂
