In this review, we will be outlining and explaining the similarities as well as the differences of two very similar Britax 2-way seats – The Britax Roundabout Vs Marathon G4.1.

Just by looking at the two seats placed side by side, it’s not hard to spot the difference, and yes, one is always better than the other.

Let’s get started.

Do I Need To Use A Pool Noodle? Yes
Easy To Install Rear-Facing? Yes Relatively
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Yes Relatively
Easy To Uninstall? Yes

Both seats come with 3-recline positions. It can be too upright for installation for younger babies, so sometimes, a pool noodle or rolled towel is needed for an installation with a proper recline.

There is always a mixed sentiment about how easy it is to install the seat rear-facing and forward facing.

I have compiled all helpful videos that can aid in seamless installation for both seats. You can see the installation videos in my separate reviews.

They both are easy to uninstall nevertheless.

Marathon G4.1 (Selected Colors)

Shoulder Harness Has Pads? Yes
Leg Straps Has Pads? No

The Britax Marathon G4.1 is heavier than the Roundabout G4.1.

Both have seat covers that are only good for hand-washing. They are both roomy, too.

Another advantage of the Marathon G4.1 over the Roundabout G4.1 is the no-rethread harness. That means the seat harness height of the Marathon moves up and down as you move the headrest so adjusting the harness of the seat for a taller child is a breeze.

The seat harness of the Roundabout G4.1 needs to be manually undone and place into the next higher slot of the seat to accommodate a growing child.

There’s an approximately USD 100 price difference between the two seats.

The Roundabout G4.1 is cheaper than the Marathon G4.1. Now let’s enumerate what the price increase is all about and if it is justifiable.

  1. The Marathon G4.1 has higher weight and height limits.
  2. The Marathon G4.1 has a no-rethread harness.
  3. Some Marathon G4.1 colors have cup holders.
  4. The Marathon G4.1 is a little bit more padded than Roundabout G4.1.
  5. If you are particular with colors, the Marathon G4.1 has more color options.

Is it worth the extra USD100? I think yes.

The Roundabout G4.1 seems to be easier to install. And despite it’s lower weight and height limits, its price point is quite decent to justify what it can give.

In my opinion, both are good as backup seats for older children but a backup seat need not be expensive. I’d go with Roundabout G4.1 for practicality sake.

But if I plan to use it more often for an older child, I’d probably go with another convertible seat that is easier to install.

  1. I wonder, perhaps, is one of these car seats easier to clean than the other… or have you found an easy-to-clean carseat? I absolutely hate having to strip the carseat down to the core to wash the fabric portions. The smell of baby vomit is very motivating though – EH! I’ve seen those that have a zipper around the outer edge – have you done a review on those car seats yet?

    1. Hi Autumn,

Both of these seats are only good for hand-wash. As long as you wash the cover as soon as possible, I think there is no problem getting the mess out of it.

The most popular car seat that has a zippered seat cover is the Chicco Nextfit Zip (at least as of writing this comment). When you need to wash the seat cover, you just unzip it. And because the seat cover is machine-washable, you don’t have to deal with the mess.

You can read my review about it here.

  2. In the conclusion, you said that both seats can be too upright for newborns and younger infants. Can you suggest a brand or model that will be less upright and suitable for infants?

    Thank you for the info.

  3. Thank you for the comparison, Pitin. If it is a choice between the two, I think I would probably go with the Marathon G4.1. It may cost a bit more, but it seems like it has more space for the child to grow, so it is a better bargain if it lasts longer. It might be a bit harder to install, but you don’t have to worry about that too often.

    1. Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I feel that installation issues would only bother you if you plan to keep on moving the car seat from one vehicle to another.

If not, leaving the car seat in one vehicle once it is tightly installed would be the best move.:)

  4. Hi Pitin,

I really like Britax seats and I think I prefer the Marathon G4.1, mainly because of the no re-thread harness and the higher height and weight limits…I was surprised when my son ended up being unusually tall from a very young age so the higher limits are a safer bet for me. I didn’t have to use a pool noodle with my first seat so the only thing I don’t understand is where exactly it would go if it was required?

    1. Hi Tennille,

Here’s a screenshot from Britax’s Youtube video showing where the pool noodle should go.
