Aside from the obvious labels saying “Marathon” and “Boulevard” on top of the seats, one cannot honestly tell the difference between The Britax Marathon Vs Boulevard Car Seat just by looking at them.

Here’s to help you know which between the Marathon G4.1 and the Boulevard G4.1 is a better choice.

Let’s get started.

Installation

Do I need to use a pool noodle/rolled towel? Yes
Easy To Install Rear-Facing? Relatively Yes
Easy To Install Forward-Facing? Relatively Yes
Easy To Uninstall? Yes

It is very seldom that parents who got the Boulevard G4.1 complain about its ease of installation. The Marathon G4.1 however, seems to have mixed feedbacks when it comes to how easy or difficult it is to install the seat.

When it comes to installation, the Boulevard G4.1 is definitely more fool-proof and easier to deal with.

Safety

Marathon G4.1 Boulevard G4.1
Country Of Origin: USA
Steel Frame: Yes
Five-Point Harness? Yes
Side Impact Tested: Yes
Approved For Airplane Use: Yes
Easy To Buckle And Unbuckle? Yes
Side Impact Protection Layers 1 2
Click And Safe Snug Harness Indicator No Yes

Having two layers of side-impact protection definitely makes the Boulevard G4.1 safer. But that doesn’t make the Marathon G4.1 unsafe.

The “click and safe snug harness indicator” gives an audible sound when you are tightening your child in the seat.

Being able to hear a click with when you pull the harness adjuster strap of the Boulevard G4.1 can give you a peace of mind that your harness adjustment is the proper fit.

However, the absence of it in the Marathon G4.1 can be easily dealt with by doing the pinch test on the straps to give you the same peace of mind about your strap adjustment.

The Seat

Marathon G4.1 Boulevard G4.1
Is The Material Breathable? Yes
Seat Weight: 19.5 pounds
Machine Washable Cover? No
Roomy? Yes
No-Rethread Harness? Yes
Comes With An Infant Body Support? Just removable body pillow No
Easy To Remove Cover? Yes
Expiration 7 years
Comes With A Cup Holder? Selected colors No
Shoulder Harness Has Pads? Yes
Leg Straps Has Pads? No

While both seats come with breathable materials, take note that the Boulevard G4.1 comes with some colors/fabrics that need to be avoided. The Laguna and the Domino fabrics of the Britax Boulevard seat seemed to be extra-sensitive especially when they constantly come in contact with velcroed materials.

Although the Marathon G4.1 comes with a removable body pillow, that would not be enough for younger babies. You will need to purchase separate infant support for both.

It’s good that selected colors of Marathon G4.1 come with cup holders. If it’s the Marathon you decide to get, choosing the color that already comes with a cup holder will a good cost saver.

Take note that these two seats have straps issue. They seem to come with short straps that can be too tight sooner than expected especially for chubby kids.

Conclusion

Originally, the price difference between the Boulevard G4.1 and the Marathon G4.1 was around USD40. The Boulevard, having upgraded features is obviously more expensive. However, I can’t help but notice the sudden price drop with the Boulevard, ranging from USD50-USD100 making it more affordable than the Marathon G4.1.

Upon checking the top seats from Amazon, the Britax Boulevard G4.1 is not even on the top 100 convertible car seats.

The Marathon G4.1, however, is still quite “trustable” since people are still buying them, at least as of writing this review. And being more “famous” than the Boulevard G4.1, it still belongs to the top 100 seats in the convertible seat category of Amazon.

But is fame a good gauge? Allow me to disagree. Here’s why.

While both seats come with major straps issue, the tie breaker can be the ease of installation since it is directly connected to how safe your child will be.

Since the Boulevard G4.1 is regarded to be easier to install, I’ll go with the one that will allow me to install the seat easily.

Next, the added safety features of the Boulevard is a good plus.

While there is still a need to purchase a cup holder for the Boulevard versus choosing the Marathon color that already comes with a cup holder, the added cost for getting it for the Boulevard is not major. Especially now that the price for the Boulevard has majorly dropped.

I’d get the Britax Boulevard if you ask me.

However, since both seats have short straps issues, be prepared to spend an added cost for a longer strap in the future, should your child grow up to be on the chubby side.

And although it is stated that both seats can be used as early as 5 pounds, I feel that the limited recline for both seats (only 3 positions) make them ideal only for children who already have good head and neck control.

  1. Regarding ease of installation, we recently installed our Marathon G4.1 rear facing with LUAS as our son has outgrown his infant carseat, and it couldn’t have been easier. I can’t speak to installation using a seat belt, but if your vehicle has carseat anchors you should have no issues installing the Marathon G4.1.

    1. Hi Miss G,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I have been reading mixed feedbacks about how easy or difficult it is to install the Marathon G4.1 and I am sure your comment will give reassurance to parents who are having mixed thoughts about the Marathon.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience with the Marathon G4.1.

      Have a nice day. 🙂

      Regards,
      Pitin

    1. Hi Laura,

The pinch test is done by grasping the harness strap at the collarbone area. If you can pinch it, that means that the strap harness is too loose and you should tighten more for safety. Do the test again until your fingers slide off the material.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  2. Very informative. I’m currently shopping around for a new car seat and this blog came in handy. The other day, a friend told that when I purchase a car seat, I need to look for the expiration date. Expiration date for a car seat? Is that a thing? What can you tell me about the expiration date and how does it affect the seat?

    1. Hi Joey,

Yes, car seats have expiration dates.

From the date it was manufactured, car seats have varying expiration dates from 5 years to 12 years, depending on the model and the brand.

You can try to look for it anywhere in the seat. If you can’t find it, look for it in the manual, or call the manufacturer.

You should not use a car seat once it has expired since materials deteriorate and become unsafe and just unreliable for safety after it has expired. You should also replace any car seat that has been in an accident, even if it does not have a single scratch on it.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,

      Pitin

  3. Both the Boulevard G4.1 and the Marathon G4.1 look like very reliable car seats with only a few slight differences such as the cup holder for the Marathon G4.1.

I would choose the Boulevard G4.1 because of the extra safety features and easier installations. Thanks.
