On my search for the best backpacks for diaper bags, I came across several options that seemed very promising. The first one I tried is an unbranded one that I used for five months before I passed it for a full-time use of my babysitter. It served us well except that it is too girly for my husband to carry. So I searched for a gender neutral backpack that both of us don’t mind carrying. The first option was the Jeep Perfect Pockets and the second choice is this Graco Gotham backpack.

I cannot find a video review of this on Youtube, so it was hard to decide whether it was worth purchasing. I decided just to look for second-hand deals (just in case it’s not worth it, at least I got it cheap;-p). And so I found a second hand one from a dad selling online. The previous owner told me they only used it several times because his wife prefers to use a shoulder bag. This was kept in storage for 1-year plus. And so I grabbed it.

Meet our 2nd hand one-year-old Graco Backpack

Last Updated: November 24, 2016

Name of the Product: The Graco Gotham Diaper Bag (Black/Grey)
My rating: 8/10
Lowest price to get it from – Amazon
Usual Price: $49.99 (Click here to check the latest price)
Pros: Lots of big and small pockets, organized huge storage
Cons: No stroller loops for you to hang this on your stroller
Bottom line: A HUGE backpack you can bring for overnight use for 2 kids in cloth diapers.

1. Storage

First Main Compartment

The main zippered main compartment has three pockets inside – one has a zipper, and the two others are open and elasticized. The zippered pocket is shallow and can fit 3-4 sanitary pads for mom’s use. The size of the elasticised pockets that are side by side can accommodate 2 disposable diapers each or 1 cloth diaper with 2 inserts in each pocket.

The main storage inside is huge it can accommodate 12 cloth diapers for 2 kids. Depending on your cloth diaper, an average of 1 diaper is needed every 4 hours. 24 hours is 6 cloth diapers for 1 child.

I personally haven’t packed for 2 kids since I only have 1 child but look at this photo I took when I borrowed 10 books from the library. The 10 books are well-placed on the first layer of this main compartment. I am imagining them as 6 cloth diapers with 2 inserts each. That means you can still stack another layer of 6 cloth diapers making it 12 that I think can last for one day.

Second Main Compartment

The second main compartment is similar in height with the first main compartment but it is less in width.

I am writing this article now in a library using a MacBook and see the inside of the second compartment with my laptop’s casing. If you notice, I still managed to fit a pouch of my essentials (white pouch). There’s two elasticised pocket as well that is the same in size as the pockets in the first main compartment. My MacBook charger is in the first pocket and the other pocket is empty.

First Top Front Pocket

The first top front pocket can fit my iPhone 6 (6plus is also possible) as well as a battery charger. There is still some space left for a charging cable as well as a headset. I’m using my iPhone to take a photo so I cannot put it in the pocket, LOL. Help me imagine it in the space beside the battery pack. :-p

The Lower Front Pockets

The first lower front pocket has zippers. Inside it are two stretchable mesh pockets. As you can see in the photo, there is so much room for more even after I put my wallet and keys.

Upon zipping it up, you will notice another open pocket outside that pocket.

The Side Pockets

There are two side pockets. One is insulated and can carry two standard size 8-oz milk bottles placed side by side. Height wise, there is still space for 2 pacifiers to put on top of the bottles or anything of that size.

The other pocket is for carrying baby wipes. The thing I like about this wipes pocket is that, if you don’t trust the casing that it comes with, you can just slide in your wipes in its original casing.

2. Easy of Use

Being hands-free is an obvious benefit of carrying a bag pack such as this. The linings inside the bag are light in color and, therefore, makes it easy for you to see the things inside.

There are no clips or straps that are specifically designed to hang this on your stroller. Graco probably wanted to make sure that you don’t hang this bag on your stroller since it is so big and when fully-packed, it will tip your stroller over.

3. Comfort

This backpack is 2 pounds when empty. Considering that it is bigger than the Jeep Perfect Pockets, it is surprisingly lighter by 0.2 lbs. One thing I noticed is that the material of the bag is so soft. Maybe that is why it is lighter. Honestly, it doesn’t feel that it is 2 pounds.

There are two adjustable carrying backpack straps that are padded for carrying comfort. The back part is also padded for additional bearing support.

4. Quality/Cost

Belonging to the lower-price range diaper bag, it is a surprise how this bag can offer so much for such a little cost.

5. Material

This bag is made up of polyester. Wiping and spot cleaning can quickly clean it. One specific way to make this bag last for you is to wipe clean the insides and spot clean the outside with a damp cloth instead of throwing it in the washer.

6. Return Policy

There is a return policy of 30 days within receipt of shipment since it is shipped and sold by Amazon. You can do any returns within that time frame.

Is this product for you?

This is by far the largest backpack I have reviewed. The storage amount is a lot that packing for two days for one child in a cloth diaper can be possible if done smartly. How much more if your kids are using disposables or are already potty-trained.

Conclusion

Graco has definitely answered the needs of parents who want more storage capacity because of a growing family. For a cheap priced diaper bag that has a lot of organizational functionality, it would be worth trying to grab this bag if you don’t want to break your budget.

  1. Is there a way to add stroller straps to this bag? I think it is perfect but I would like the option to attach to my stroller if needed.

    1. Hi Chas,

There isn’t anything available to add a stroller strap to this bag. What I have tried is to attach this stroller hook side by side to my stroller handle (around 2 inches apart) and then hang the grab handle to the hook.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Pitin

  2. I really like Graco Backpack. I think this backpack is not only for diaper, It can be later used for same picnic or excursions. There is a lot of space and many pockets. It’s nice that it can be used for moms and dads. And the price is affordable, especially when you can use these bags for several years and for a variety of occasions.

Thanks for pictures, I hope you will enjoy this backpack.

    1. Hi Deva,

Thanks for dropping by my site. I agree that it is not only for diapers. As you can see from the photos, I use them for borrowing books from the library as well. 🙂 It is very spacious. There is one time I used to pack 20 cloth diapers inside, and yes, they fit nicely. 🙂

      Cheers,

      Pitin

  3. Not a bad looking backpack! It truly is gender neutral. If I didn’t know that it was used for diapers I would think it was an ordinary backpack!

  4. The large compartment in the middle i think, large zip lock baggies might help to keep things organized in the middle. Marilyn

    1. Hi Marilyn,

Thanks for the zip lock bags suggestions. 🙂 Never thought of that! I am actually using several smaller compartments for my diaper bag to have more segragation

  5. Hi Pitin

These days, it is all about watching your budget. At least, that’s the case for me. For this reason, I feel that this diaper backpack is the perfect solution. With just one kid(for now), this one seems to be exactly what we need. It’s awesome for storage of the powder, wipes, diapers and the milk bottles.

Thanks for a really helpful review.

    You saved us some money!!!

    Regards

    Roopesh

    1. I am a budget-mama too Roopesh, so I definitely understand.;) As long as it serves its purpose, expensive and branded can wait until we can afford them. 🙂

  6. This Diaper bag seems like a nice bag. I like that it is a backpack and has lots of space, as everyone knows you tend to take a lot of stuff with you for your child in diapers. I like all the pockets to keep things organized, and the insulated pocket is a very good idea.

    1. If you are not using baby bottles for your baby, you can also use the insulated pocket for your water bottle so that it stays cold. 🙂 Also, if you bring snacks for your child that needs to be kept cold, such as a yogurt, the insulated pocket would be perfect for that. 🙂

  7. I think as a parent that often travel with a small baby, backpack and baby carrier are what we need. And it should be as lightweight as possible. That’s my priority. A lot of time I found that if the backpack is lightweight, most probably the capacity is small and quality might be sacrificed. It looks like this bag is big enough and lightweight. Excellent. Thanks for the review, Pitin.

    1. It’s a plus too that the bag is not very loud in design. Even Dads will be fine carrying the diaper bag since they don’t look like a diaper bag at all. 🙂
